in a hotel in ecuador
a matador slams shut the door
across lonely quito
broken hooves churn up the floor
he knew that it would end like this
with a fight and one final kiss
and a knife that he knew could not miss
would make it look so effortless
to bait the bull and wait
to pull away before it's too late
the matador has spoke
there's nothing left to say
he calmly strides across the square
his eyes with a thousand yard stare
the whispers cut throught the air
across town, the bulls nostrils flare
red, like the hair that she left
the bed, still soaked with her sweat
he bows to the crowd with respect
as the roses, they fall at his steps
eye to eye with the bull's fiery gaze
like a statue, he's frozen with rage
and as the bull begins to run
it would finish what that girl begun
the bull charged and he closed his eyes
the cape just hung dull at his side
the crowd fell silent, not a sound
as el fuerte collapsed on the ground
to bait the bull and wait
to pull away before it's too late
the matador you know
he's nothing left to say
to show her what she'd done
he let it run him through
and now the matador
has nothing left to prove
he fell at the plaza they say
a simple slip, el fuerte's mistake
how could someone so strong and so brave
simply be carried away
